Caregiver Alliance of
Suffolk County

About Us

History

Family members are the foundation of support for elders in this country.  The federal government recognized this fact by establishing the Family Caregiver Program though the Older Americans Act.  In Massachusetts, the Executive Office of Elder Affairs established and provides oversight to caregiver programs in the Commonwealth.

The Caregiver Alliance of Suffolk County, created in 2001, is a collaboration of five Suffolk County Elder Service Providers: Boston Senior Home Care, Central Boston Elder Services, Chelsea-Revere-Winthrop Elder Services, Commission on the Affairs of the Elderly, and Ethos.

The PARTNERS

   Boston Senior Home Care

Boston Senior Home Care is a private, non-profit corporation established in 1974 to provide case management, service planning and in-home social support services to low-income persons sixty years of age and older.  Its mission is to ensure that culturally diverse elders and others, particularly those of limited means, can remain in their homes or in other supportive community settings with dignity and independence. BSHC is one of Boston’s three (3) Aging Service Access Points (ASAP). ASAPs are state designated organizations that provide a single access point for information and services related to publicly funded community-based long term care.

Services provided directly by BSHC include case management, as well as information & referral. Other services, such as homemaking, home-delivered meals and personal care, are contracted out by BSHC to provider agencies.  Boston Senior Home Care also has several specialized programs including Adult Foster Care, Group Adult Foster Care, Supportive Housing and Caregiver Support.

BSHC employs a diverse staff that is reflective of the community that it serves. In order to better serve its elders, BSHC provides services in many languages including Cantonese, Mandarin, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Creole, Vietnamese and Russian.

BSHC serves approximately 3000 clients living in the neighborhoods of East Boston, Charlestown, the North End, Beacon Hill, the West End, South Boston, Dorchester and Mattapan.

Central Boston Elder Services is the lead agency for the Caregiver Alliance of Suffolk County (CGA), a program providing comprehensive caregiver services in the Greater Boston area.

Following the tireless efforts of elders and community leaders from nine Boston neighborhoods, Area II Home Care for Senior Citizens was incorporated as a private, non-profit organization in 1974. Ten years later the agency was renamed Central Boston Elder Services, Inc. (CBES). Today, CBES is one of twenty-seven home care corporations in Massachusetts and the only such agency recognized by the state as a Minority Business Enterprise.

CBES serves over 4,000 elders each month in the Boston neighborhoods of Roxbury, Allston, Brighton, Back Bay, Fenway, Mission Hill, North Dorchester, North Jamaica Plain, and the South End. The agency’s mission, “to provide services to low-income, frail elders which allow them to remain at home and delay or avoid institutionalization” is achieved through short- and long-term in-home services, ranging from personal care to home delivered meals. Services are provided through contractual arrangements with a network of not-for-profit and for-profit agencies as well as through extensive collaborations.

CBES staff are caring, dedicated, and experienced professionals with backgrounds in nursing, case management, social work, and administration.
